How to Keep Your Carpet Clean for Longer?

While you might not realise it, your carpet is one of the most expensive features of your home, especially if you’ve opted for something more luxurious.

Luckily though, as long as you look after it, a good carpet can last for years and years.

With this in mind, the John Frederick team are going to be sharing with you some simple tips and tricks on how to keep your carpet cleaner for longer.

Doormats

This might not be the advice you wanted to hear, but the easiest way to clean your carpet is by stopping it from getting dirty in the first place.

The best way to do this? Doormats. A good, abrasive doormat used properly will help stop mud from being tracked through your house and onto your carpet, saving you the headache of having to get it cleaned.

No shoes indoors

While doormats are great and certainly a step in the right direction, they won’t be able to stop everything.

If members of your family still insist on wearing shoes around the house, particularly in the carpeted rooms, your carpets will get dirty. It’s as simple as that.

Then there’s also the wear and tear that the shoes themselves cause. Whether it’s trainers or dress shoes, if they’re all over your carpet, the fibres will get damaged.

Vacuum regularly

This might seem like an obvious tip, but keeping to a regular vacuuming schedule is the best way to ensure that your carpets remain clean.

Vacuuming will improve your carpet’s health as well as the air quality around your home, so it’s definitely worth doing.

We recommend vacuuming at least once a week – twice a week if you have pets in the house.

We would also suggest that you keep your vacuum up to date and maintain it properly. Using a ten-year-old, clogged-up vacuum with little to no suction may end up causing more harm than good.

Noticed a stain? Act quickly

Unfortunately, no matter how well we maintain our carpets, accidents will happen and stains will occur.

It’s how you react to them that matters. Remember: the longer a stain sets in, the harder it will be to remove.

Before that time, however, make sure that you’re properly prepared. Having a spot and stain remover at the ready is an excellent idea, and an abundance of kitchen towels helps too.

When it comes to technique, make sure that you blot the stain, never rub. Rubbing the stain will only serve to drive it further into the carpet, something you absolutely want to avoid.
